Pope John Paul II was born as Karol Jozef Wojty, on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland. He was ordained in 1946, became the bishop of Ombi in 1958, and became the archbishop of Krakow in 1964. He was made a cardinal by Pope Paul VI in 1967. In 1978 he became the first non-Italian pope in more than 400 years.(John Paul II Biography Bio.com) He was a vocal advocate for human rights and used his influence to effect political change.His mother died when he was nine and his older brother Edmund died when he was twelve. When he was young he enjoyed skiing and swimming.

Pope John Paul II's dad died in 1942 and was an army sergeant. During World War II he worked in a chemical factory and as a laborer. After WWII he became ordained as a priest on Nov. 1, 1946. In Poland Bishop Wojtyla, along with the Cardinal Wyszynski of Warsaw it was a rallying point for anti-Communist religious people. The Communist government came to to see him as an enemy because he was a popular public figure he was handsome, strong, a good speaker, and a very smart person. (Pope John Paul II.
